Dr Douglas thanks Sandy Point for Labour’s rich legacy; introduces Kenny as “David has moved forward

Scores of Labour Party supporters on Sunday accompanied the Rt Hon Dr Denzil Llewellyn Douglas, the Labour Party Candidates in the upcoming Parliamentary Elections and the National Executive of the Party in their joyful celebration of thirty years of Parliamentary service of their beloved Leader of the Parliamentary Opposition and Leader of the 87-year-old St Kitts Nevis Labour Party (SKNLP).

Sunday’s Worship Service of Praise Thanksgiving and Mobilisation took place at the Unique Touch Christian Center, Sandy Point, under the direction of Pastor Clive Saunders, who spoke on the theme “It’s Time To Move” referencing mainly the Book of II Kings 7:3-10 of the Holy Scriptures.

Dr Douglas in his remarks to the congregation outlined how historically important it was for him to worship with the pastors and the large congregation of worshippers gathered at the Unique Touch Christian Center, in Thanksgiving to God for his 30 years of service as a Parliamentarian in the National Assembly of St Kitts and Nevis.

He explained that from his historical knowledge of the Labour Movement and his family contacts in the town of Sandy Point, he  was proud of the influential role that Sandy Point had played in preparing him for the execution of public service to the people of his Constituency and also nationally.

Dr Douglas paid glowing tribute to one of Sandy Point’s fearless and noblest sons in the person of Thomas Manchester, one of the celebrated Founding Fathers of the Labour Movement who became the first President of the Workers League (St Kitts Nevis Labour Party) in 1932, and which birthed the St Kitts Nevis Trades & Labour Union in 1940.

Dr Douglas outlined that he was honoured and proud to have inherited that Legacy of Leadership of the Labour Movement from Manchester through the Rt Excellent Sir Robert Llewellyn Bradshaw (deceased 1978), the Rt Excellent Sir Caleb Azariah  Paul Southwell (deceased 1979), and Sir Lee Llewellyn Moore (deceased 2000), and was proud to carry forward that Legacy into the next generation.

He reminded the congregation that “the SKNLP has always been the political organisation with the compassion, competence and vision to take our people and country from one level to the next. Our Leaders have always had an abiding commitment to the cause of fairness equity and opportunity for the people of our country. It is this same humble spirit and people-centric philosophy that has motivated and guided me over the years. I wanted to do my part in making life better for our people and to end that vicious cycle of poverty, disease and depression which characterised the Manchester years and against which the Labour Movement was founded and sustained by generations of former Leaders.”

Although Dr Douglas alluded to the enormous accomplishments that the people of St Kitts and Nevis have achieved as a nation during his tenure, he lamented that “there is still much that is yet to be done. This is why I have again moved forward to serve this country..........It is my deep desire to continue to lend of my experience, maturity and leadership skills acquired to take this country to even higher heights of peace and prosperity.

The veteran politician and Leader reminded the congregation of the long list of Sandy Pointers of the Labour Movement who had served or sought to serve the interest of Sandy Pointers in the Parliament, some of whom had served with him, and thanked them all for their service. He paid tribute to Ivan DeGrasse, Charles E Mills (in whose honour the Sandy Point High School was renamed), James Buchanan Esq, Dr Bertram Charles, Her Excellency Ambassador Jacinth Henry-Martin and Dr Norgen Wilson.

In thanking former St Kitts and Nevis Ambassador to Cuba, HE Kenny David Douglas for coming forward to serve the people of Sandy Point in contesting the upcoming Parliamentary Elections, Dr Douglas introduced him to the congregation.
