PM Skerrit, during his address, said, “Let me inform this Honourable House that the final agreement for the construction of the international airport would be signed, by the Grace of God, in the coming month of May 2021.” Adding that the designs for the airport are underway and would be finished soon.
The construction of a new international airport would be initiated with the funds generated through the Citizenship by Investment programme. However, the Prime Minister also explained that the People's Republic of China has already committed to assisting the Government with the funding of the international airport.
To fulfil the promise of a new international airport, the Government of the Commonwealth of Dominica has already initiated the construction of the housing sector in Jor Burton to accommodate the people who are displaced due to land acquisition for the airport.“The lab which will provide necessary and important support during the construction of the airport is under construction Mr Speaker. The Government is building homes for thirty-two families impacted by the airport, and those homes are being built as we speak Mr Speaker, with several local contractors engaged,” PM added.
Several people who decided to accept cash payments in exchange for their properties are now building their new homes and expanding their businesses, added Prime Minister. While referring to the financial burden on the people of Dominica, PM Skerrit said the prudent and sensible approach of the labour party government would no doubt limit the financial burden on the people for the construction of brand-new international airport.
The new international airport will accommodate long haul flight to Dominica, boosting the tourism sector for the country. The international airport is the most anticipated project of the Government as it has been in the books for about two decades.
