All COVID-19 patients in St Kitts and Nevis recovered: PM Harris

Prime Minister of St Kitts and Nevis Dr Timothy Harris stated that it has been six months since the country reopened its borders and the government continue to act on its experts' advice. He stated that the government have taken all the necessary measures to ensure the safety of the people of St Kitts and Nevis. "As a result, we have the least number of COVID-19 cases, and all COVID-19 cases are fully recovered" stated PM Timothy Harris. Prime Minister Dr Timothy Harris made these remarks during his weekly Leadership Matters Programme. He also stated that St Kitts and Nevis recorded no coronavirus related deaths, and the health system is operating well.

"I encourage us all to continue to do our part to be as safe as possible. Please get vaccinated if you are yet to do so." stated the Prime Minister.

Furthermore, he stated that from the full opening of our borders on October 31, 2020, to April 24, 2021, passenger throughput was 10,994 from 3191 flights. Global travel is down as a consequence of COVID-19. Tourist arrivals will recover when more persons get vaccinated, and confidence in the safety of global travel is restored. He stated that vaccination is a key factor affecting safety and confidence in travel. He stated that over 12,000 people have been vaccinated in St Kitts and Nevis since the vaccination programme that started on February 22, 2021. Prime Minister stated that the United States of America has 60 million doses of AstraZeneca vaccines which it does not need, and contractual arrangements are reported to be in place for 300 million more doses. He said the USA recently shared 4 million doses with Canada and Mexico. He noted that CARICOM has asked that the region be accorded some of that stockpile. Vaccines are scarce globally and of short shelf life.

"With the countries producing the vaccines insisting that they must get priority attention, it has become very challenging for small island states like those in CARICOM to access enough vaccines in the timeframes we need to secure them," stated PM Harris.

Prime Minister also thanked the Government of India for its generosity in supplying St Kitts and Nevis with 20,000 doses of the vaccines. He stated that the government and people of the country stand in solidarity and friendship with India which is now being rocked by the upsurge in COVID-19 cases. He also urged those countries that can be generous in their support to India.
