Jan Olszewski, who served as Poland's prime minister in 1991-1992, has died, ruling party Law and Justice (PiS) senior member Antoni Macierewicz told PAP on Friday.

Olszewski died in a Warsaw military hospital late on Thursday, state television reported on Twitter.

Olszewski, 88, was the third premier after the collapse of communism in 1989.

Born on August 20, 1930, Jan Olszewski was a defense attorney in trials of oppositionists during communist times, and a prime minister, political leader and adviser to the late President Lech Kaczyński in democratic Poland.

The tabloid Super Express said on Friday that Olszewski had fainted at home several days ago and was taken to the hospital. He remained unconscious throughout, his wife was quoted as saying.
