The Omicron variant of COVID-19 has been spreading at a fast but non-lethal pace. But, the scientists at Wuhan University in China confirmed NeoCov variant is the deadliest variant of coronavirus since the pandemic started.
The variant is currently spreading among bats in South Africa; the scientists warned that considering global mobility, it would also spread worldwide.
Scientists in Wuhan stated that the NeoCov is connected to the Middle East respiratory syndrome MERS-coronavirus and is very deadly.
According to the researchers, NeoCoV has the potential to combine the high death rate of MERS-CoV (one in every three infected persons dies on average) and the high transmission rate of the present SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus.
The studies also suggested that the current coronavirus vaccines are not effective against the NeoCov variant.
The NeoCoV virus was previously connected to infections in Middle Eastern nations in 2012 and 2015. In many aspects, it resembles the COVID-19-causing coronavirus. NeoCoV was discovered in a bat population in South Africa and has only spread among these species.
The World Health Organization have not released much detail on the new variant; however, they added that NeoCov's potential risks to human require more study. WHO also suggested people continue getting vaccinated and maintain a sense of calm.
