Brooklyn police stated that the officer who shot dead a 20-year-old was taking out her taser but mistakingly took out her gun. After the fatal killing of Daunte Wright, people are protesting all over the city to demand justice.
Daunte- a 20-year-old, was brutally shot dead by a police officer in the US city of Brooklyn Center in Minnesota. The officer has been identified as Kim Potter, who has worked for Brooklyn Center Police for 26 years.
Brooklyn Center Police Chief Tim Gannon reported the as “an accidental discharge, which happened when police were attempting to arrest Wright on an outstanding warrant.
Wright's death has sparked protests and demonstrations all across the city, forcing authorities to announce curfew.
“I’ll Tase you! I’ll Tase you! Taser! Taser! Taser!” the officer can be heard shouting on her bodycam footage released at a news conference.
In the bodycam video, after firing a single shot from the handgun, the car rushes away, and the police officer is heard stating, “Holy (expletive)! I shot him.”
Law enforcement agencies moved up their occupancy across the Minneapolis area. The number of Minnesota National Guard companies was suspected to more than doubled to over 1,000 by Monday night.
Brooklyn Center Mayor Mike Elliott called the firing “profoundly tragic” and stated the officer should be dismissed.
“We cannot manage to make errors that lead to the loss of life of other people,” he replied. “We’re going to do everything we can to ensure that review is done and our communities are made whole."
On Monday evening, protestors opposed the curfew to gather for a second night outside Brooklyn Center Police headquarters. Eyewitnesses stated some fired fireworks and bottles at officers who answered with tear gas and stun grenades.
