India reports 7 million COVID-19 cases, stands second after US

Sunday, 11th October 2020

India has now reached more than seven million coronavirus cases as it takes a step closer to crossing the United States as the world’s most-infected country.

Health ministry data revealed on Sunday that contaminations have increased by approximately 75,000 to 7.05 million, next only to the US, which has reported 7.67 million cases.

With the abundance of new cases dropping in recent weeks, health experts recommend the mask and distancing fatigue setting in.

Authorities assume that the actual number of diseases may be much higher, as examination rates in the enormous country of 1.3 billion people – house to some of the world’s most congested cities – are much lower than in many other nations.

This is carried out by a sequence of examinations measuring antibodies to the virus between the Indian population that have shown infection rates could be numerous times higher than formally registered.

As of the Health Ministry’s latest announcement, India’s mortality toll reaches at 108,334, a lower number compared with the US – which has so far registered more than 214,000 deaths – or other countries in Europe with high caseloads.

Indian health expert Randeep Guleria stated during a conversation to Associated Press that, “We have been capable of keeping the curve rise slow, but I do recognise that we have not been capable of getting it to move aggressively down. That’s similar to our population density, variety of our nation and socioeconomic difficulties,”

Nevertheless, some specialists claim that India’s death toll may not be reliable because of inadequate recording and health infrastructure and ineffectual examination.

The rise in infections in India comes as the government continues to lift restrictions to boost the economy battered by a severe lockdown imposed in March.
