Global COVID vaccine inequality increasing every day,' WHO warns

Tuesday, 23rd March 2021

CHIEF OF WORLD HEALTH ORGANISATION

The World Health Organisation has again shown its concerns on the lack of vaccine equity. The WHO has always urged the vaccine producing countries to help the poorer and vulnerable countries with certain amounts of "vaccine aid".

The "inequitable distribution" of COVID-19 vaccines common is becoming "more art every day," the head of the World Health Organisation (WHO) again said on Monday, repeating calls for more solidarity.

"The gap between the number of vaccines given in rich nations, and the number of vaccines given through COVAX is growing every single day, and becoming more art every day," WHO chief Dr. Tedros Ghebreyesus Adhanom told reporters.

"Countries that are now vaccinating more youthful, healthy people at low risk of infection are doing so at the cost of the experiences of health workers, older characters and other at-risk groups in other countries.

"The world’s poorest nations wonder whether rich nations mean what they say when they talk about solidarity," he added.

COVAX is a vaccine distribution force co-led by the WHO. It aims for the COVID-19 vaccines to have been rolled out in all countries within the first 100 days of 2021, including in 92 lower-income economies, and for about 20 per cent of the population of every country to have been inoculated by the end of the year.

About 448 million doses from COVID-19 vaccines have so far been administered extensive. The US, UK and EU/EEA together account for over 206 million of the doses given.

Meanwhile, over 31 million doses had been distributed to 57 roots through the COVAX list as of Monday. There are only a few countries holding the massive supply of the coronavirus vaccine and using it accordingly.

Earlier, the UK had suspended the delivery of some vaccines to fulfil the immunisation demands of the country. Similarly, Italy also halted a vaccine consignment to Australia as well.
