“It seems that one individual, who is presumed to be a baby, is still lost in waters,” official Herve Tourmente told reporters in Loon-Plage near Dunkirk, announcing bad weather situations had made the endeavoured crossing particularly dangerous.
A passing English vessel informed that the boat was in the struggle, triggering an extensive search and rescue operation requiring six vessels with aerial assistance.
A probe into the circumstances of the sinking was presented by the Dunkirk prosecutor.
An expanding number of people endeavouring a better tomorrow have attempted to reach the UK across the dangerous and busy shipping path in recent months, with four deaths reported in 2019 and seven so far in 2020.
In September, French officials announced they had prevented more than 1,300 people, including a handful who had strived to swim the 30-odd kilometres (18.6 miles) beyond the Channel.
