Baby in mother's arm shot dead by Trinidad and Tobago coast guards, PM Rowley express sympathies
Trinidad and Tobago coastal guards fired on an immigrant boat, killing a 9-month-old baby in his mother's arms. As per reports, the incident occurred when the coast guards were attempting to intercept the boat carrying migrants from Venezuela.  The mother of the child was also injured in the act, and after the vessel was seized, the mother was one of the people taken into custody. Before he could get to the hospital, the nine-month-old baby boy died from his injuries. In this case, the coast guard said they fired on the migrant boat's engines because it tried to run them over. They said they were afraid for their lives, and everything happened in self-defence.  Trinidad and Tobago Scarborough, one of two Cape Class patrol ships built two months ago and sent to protect Trinidad's maritime borders, was among the boats involved in the accident that happened just before midnight Saturday. Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago, Dr Keith Rowley, expressed his grief on the accident and conveyed deepest condolences to the family of the infant. He also talked to the Vice-President of Venezuela Delcy Rodríguez and conveyed sympathies.  "I expressed my heartfelt condolences on my own behalf and on behalf of Trinidad and Tobago. People in Venezuela should not be encouraged to risk their lives and the lives of others by making illegal and dangerous border crossings," said PM Rowley. Due to political and economic stability, thousands of Venezuelans risk their lives, seeking asylum in other countries. Trinidad and Tobago, which is only 757 km far, seem like an easy to reach destination for such individuals. Venezuelan migrants often get on small boats to reach better countries in order to have a stable, easy life. However, most of the times, they experience an unprecedented fate leading to such horrific incidents.
