Officials announced on Tuesday that the body of a girl believed to be Venezuelan was discovered in the Rio Grande river between Mexico and the United States, marking the latest case of a migrant dying while attempting to enter the United States.
Authorities in the United States had requested assistance in locating a missing girl dressed in a red jacket, pants, and white socks. The girl's body was discovered in a stretch of river in Ciudad Acuna, Mexico, near the Texas border.
The girl's death was mourned by Mexico's migration institute, which issued a statement. Two officials in orange life vests are seen removing a child's body from the water by the shoulders and ankles.
Many migrants have lost their lives while attempting to reach Mexico's northern border with the United States, including men and children who drowned while attempting to cross the river that separates the two countries.
The number of Venezuelans crossing into Mexico increased dramatically in 2021, prompting Mexico's government to impose new visa requirements for tourists from Venezuela earlier this month in an attempt to reduce migration.
