Haiti: Judge Mathieu Chanlatte to probe Jovenel Moise's murder

Haiti: After several days of struggle, a new judge has been appointed to lead the investigation of Haitian President Jovenel Moise's assassination. The announcement was made on Tuesday by a senior magistrate.

Bernard Saint-Vil: The dean of the Court of First Instance in Port-au-Prince, Bernard Saint-Vil, stated that Judge Mathieu Chanlatte had been picked for the job.

Jean Wilner Morin, president of the National Association of Haitian Magistrates, said that judge Mathieu Chanlatte would not be threatened.

"It is an inquiry that will demand time. We also wish that the officials will put all the mandatory resources at the disposal of magistrate Chanlatte and will also guarantee his safety," Morin declared.

Trained mercenaries broke into the presidential residence on July 7 and shot Jovenel Moise dead. His wife Martine was wounded, but she survived the tragic attack and sustained injuries on her arm.

Pierre Esperance, the Secretary-General and Executive Director of the National Human Rights Defence Network, said he hopes Judge Chanlatte will review the case "with the law as a compass, without getting into political exile.

Security Minister Rockefeller Vincent said he would ensure that all safety measures for Judge Mathieu Chanlatte and court evidence are in place.

Moise had been ruling the poor and disaster-plagued country by decree as gang violence spiked and COVID-19 spread.

The government of Haiti also requested the United Nations to conduct an "International Inquiry" into the matter. They demanded a similar investigation as to when the terrorist attack left Lebanese Prime Minister Rafic Hariri dead, among several others. The Haitian police have already arrested over 17 Venezuelans, Chief of Security officer of President, while notices have also been issued to many others, including a judge from Haiti's highest court, a former senator and a businessman.

The United States of America have assured to assist Haiti in the tough times, President Biden had also condemned the attack.
