Cara Delevingne says working with Bajan popstar Rihanna on new sci-fi film Valerian gave them a chance to reflect on how far her career has come.

Now cementing herself as an actress, Delevingne plays one of the lead roles in the film, which is thought to be the most expensive independent movie ever made.

She also features on the soundtrack, with her song I Feel Everything, and says that it was a no-brainer for her to turn to the Work singer when she wanted some words of wisdom.

"As friends especially I've always spoken to her about my dreams," Delevingne told Sky News.

"Actually when we were at the premiere together she was like 'it's so funny when you came to my house in L.A and you said to me I can't wait I just want to be an actress so badly and do music' and she was like 'look where we are now'," she added.

"She definitely has been a really great support to me, not only as a friend but of course she's a great person to ask for music advice."

French comic brought to life

Delevingne's co-star Dane DeHaan, who plays the titular Valerian, says it was impressive to see how the popstar combined her music career with filming her role as a shapeshifter.

"She's amazing. She works so hard, she has so much going on, she's so prolific," DeHaan said.

"To see her come on to a film set turn everything else off and just focus on that, and then to do a good job and deliver, it was awesome."

The film is the latest offering from Fifth Element director Luc Besson, who wanted to make it since reading French comic Valerian and Laureline as a child.

Delevingne says it was an incredible opportunity to work with the film-maker.

"I think just being in a Luc Besson film has been one of the most life-changing experiences I've ever had, especially in film," Delevingne said.

"He's one of my cinematic heroes, so to work with him has been such a dream."

DeHaan added that it was like stepping in to a world created by Besson - and because it was so CGI heavy it was "amazing" when he saw the finished film for the first time.

"Luc has been working on this movie for 10 years, it's the movie he's wanted to make his entire life so he had all the world in his mind and he had pictures of all the aliens and he explained it as much as he could." DeHaan said.

"While you're filming it you use your imagination, but then watching it it's amazing to see how much further Luc's imagination goes than most other people.

"Technology has finally caught up with Luc Besson's imagination and that's just super exciting."
