Tarnadi: “Achaibersing establishes private company with state resources”

Suriname: The more one speaks out on New Surfin NV's high-profile issue, the more it smacks improper administration from the government's side. The policymakers in question, namely Ministers Armand Achaibersing (Finance and Planning) and Albert Ramdin (Foreign Affairs, International Business, and International Cooperation), have attempted, after social commotion has arisen, to iron out the fold by indicating that New Surfin NV is a 100 percent state-owned company and that there is nothing wrong with the establishment of the company, NDP parliamentarian Remie Tarnadi said.
The leaked underlying documents, such as the deed of incorporation of New Surfin NV, however, show that it nowhere appears to be a state-owned company and that it can be reasonably assumed that it is a private company, says Tarnadi.
The deed of incorporation of New Surfin NV states that at the time of incorporation, 5,100 shares were issued and paid-up in cash, in which the Ministry of Finance and Planning participates. The fact that the Ministers of Finance and Planning and Foreign Affairs, International Business and International Cooperation (BIBIS) are mentioned by name in the Supervisory Board makes it extremely suspicious, as the coalition partners are not aware of establishing the company.
In line with this, action has also taken place beyond the Council of Ministers' sight, Tarnadi notes. The seriousness of this issue lies in the fact that funds from the treasury have been deposited into a private company, namely New Surfin NV, without observing legal procedures. It must therefore be indicated that the ministers in question have committed a criminal offense in the context of, among other things, the Anti-Corruption Act 2017 and the Government Accounts Act 2017.
As Minister of Finance and Planning, Achaibersing has moreover ignored his own legal adviser's advice, whereby the appointment of Achaibersing to the Supervisory Board of New Surfin NV is technically possible but strongly smacks of conflict of interest, and thus knowingly and deliberately. Committed the wrongful act, Tarnadi considers.
“As righteous Surinamese and guardians of the sovereignty of the country, it is of the utmost importance that we ensure that the State is under no circumstances disadvantaged and that everyone, without regard to the person, is called to account and is actually held accountable. For acts committed”, says the parliamentarian.
According to him, it is abundantly clear that State resources have been misused, namely for a private company where at least one member of the government is also a member.
