St Kitts and Nevis all set to establish Sea Moss Production sites

St Kitts and Nevis: The Director of the Fisheries and Marine Resources Department, Randel Thompson, announced that the island is all set to develop sea moss production exhibition sites. The establishment of these sites will take place over the next weeks and marks a significant move to transform the marine sector.

The development will take place as a major part of the Department's Transformation Strategy 2024.

The announcement was made by Thompson during a recent press conference during which he also unveiled plans to boost aquaculture. He said that the Department is getting into aquaculture and working to establish it to the next level. As part of aquaculture, he said that he is looking at sea moss production and added, "One of the things that we are looking to do within the first quarter of this year is to establish exhibition sites, and we will start between the areas of Old Road to New Guinea."

He added that after the establishment of the site there, the Department will look at how sea moss production can be done.

In addition to this, Thompson also shared plans to set up an exhibition site in Dieppe Bay. He said that several benefits could be derived from this site because of the conditions of the sea in that coastal area.

The Fisheries Department director also said that stakeholders will be invited to view the development of the sites to learn about the sustainable and innovation methods of sea moss farming.

He outlined, "We will invite stakeholders, fishers and young entrepreneurs to be a part of the process so that they can themselves witness that sea moss production is a possible way forward which can supplement their income and become something they can do full time."

While reiterating to boost the overall agriculture sector, the Director stated that once the country will harness the potential of sea moss through training and research conducted at the sites, St Kitts and Nevis will be anticipated to record substantial economic growth.

He also noted that skilled fishers fold will further contribute to a more resilient and sustainable marine sector.
