Police announcement of investigation sparks more outrage

Friday, 4th January 2019

A statement by the Police High Command that an investigation has been launched into the arrest and release of two visitors who assaulted and beat two uniformed police officers in the lobby of the St. Kitts Marriott, has sparked more outrage.

Several nationals at home and overseas weighed on the announcement on social media.

Vida Herbert: "Strupes, they done let them go, so they only making something now because people talking.

Cuthbert Dickenson: "Vida Herbert are you okay? Oh, I got it, it's the popular thing to say."

Cleopatra Potter: "Let Kittitians go to the United States hit or abuse a white policeman dead or in prison. You all wrong for letting them disrespect. Shame on who let them go. I am totally upset."

Micha Hazel: This is unbelievable. I trust that the world doesn't get hold of this because it sends a poor message about corruption, respect and support for law enforcement. Ridiculous. I guess that the person or persons who allowed them to leave does not understand the importance of protecting the constitution. Worst, I guess that the message to uphold the law to the highest extent that was written by the person in charge of the police unit and put on Social media, really meant that the disrespect and violation of constitutional rights in St. Kitts only applies to the nationals but it does not apply to anyone else. This is an insult to all sworn officers.

Avernelle Powell: "Investigation my ass. They should have been charged for assault of an officer. Investigation after the fact is bullshit. The video was clear"

Cleopatra Potter: "They should make them pay a fine. Who cares if they missed their flight?"

Carla Matthew: "Give it a .....break. You all not going to do anything, if it was somebody from here they would a best break up they ... put them in de hospital and not a thing for it."

Glen Guishard: "You all full a .... to let them people go without being penalised."

James McCall: "Announcing an investigation sounds nice but it is more like window dressing and a royal waste of time if the people were not charged and allowed to leave."

Charles Nisbett: "Ah feel shame!!!!"

Sharon Simmons: "I'm outraged!!!"

Maria Matthew Julius: "Please take that damn headline down, investigate me ... What they gonna be charge and fine from the USA? Damage is done and then we want to fight crime with only our own. Tension rise to another level."

Karamel Tanya Laurent: "Sad thing is if they were locals it would've been a different ending. Tourists are not above the law and this just makes law enforcement and persons in authority look like they offer preferential treatment because of their skin colour or place of origin. Damn shame."

Rashell Thompson: "Investigating? How backwards can you guys continue to operate? You've launched an investigation after you've allowed them to leave the country? If your investigation reveals that they committed a crime and should be charged, what will be your next step? Are you going to request extradition? We know you're not, so please tell us what your next step will be?. This is just a hollow, waste-of-resources process in an attempt to appease Kittitians."
