A partial lockdown has been imposed in Guadeloupe after the recent surge in coronavirus cases. The new restrictions will remain in effect for three weeks.

Authorities stated that the new measures would begin from August 4, 2021, with the re-introduction of a daily evening curfew from 8:00 pm to 5:00 am. Besides this, travelling during the day is also restricted to a 10km radius.

The administrative officials have also ordered the closure of all stadiums, bars, gyms and even swimming pools. While other shops can remain open and restaurants can do service only at lunchtime.

The director-general of Guadeloupe's regional health agency Valerie Denux said that the number of new coronavirus cases has doubled in the past 3 weeks, and the island is witnessing more than 3,000 new cases every week.

"We're in a catastrophic situation," she adds.

Besides this, another Caribbean French island Martinique also returned to lockdown on Friday for three weeks, and the island of Reunion imposed a two-week lockdown.

France is also witnessing a fourth wave of the coronavirus, with about half of the people fully immunized. But the figures are highly lower in the French overseas territories, as per to AFP news agency. On Monday, French President Emmanuel Macron went to social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram to try to deal with the misinformation about vaccines following the third demonstration over a controversial Covid health pass. Small island nations are witnessing a peak in coronavirus cases. The island of Dominica on Tuesday announced new limitations, ordering a full lockdown for seven days. The authorities believe the new clusters appearing in the country are due to illegal entry. The government have announced the full shutdown of non-essential businesses, and only essential activities are allowed. Besides this, a full-weekend curfew starting from Saturday evening to Monday morning is also placed in effect to curb the infections.
