Melissa Skerrit Foundation gives 50 scholarships, 150 backpacks full of supplies

School education is a very significant tool for everyone to succeed in life and get something different. It helps a lot in lessening the challenges of a difficult life and for the fifth year in a row Melissa Skerrit Foundation grown up as a boon for the children of Dominica.

In a recent event in Dominica on Wednesday, Melissa Skerrit Foundation has given 50 scholarships to the students at pre-school, secondary school and high school level. Along with that, the non-profit organisation also give away 150 free backpacks filled with school supplies for effective work in the classroom.

Melissa Skerrit Foundation alongside its important contributors has ceaselessly put the need of Dominican residents at the cutting edge at all of its endeavours.

Since its inception, the foundation has propelled four noteworthy projects which incorporates – elderly assistance, single baby mother programme, school feeding and back to school programme.

“The ‘back to school’ programme has been operational from the past 5 years and during this time we have assisted hundreds of Dominicans at all educational levels through the payment of school fees, presentation of school supplies including bags, stationery and also complete uniform packages,” said chairperson of the foundation Melissa Skerrit.

She additionally included, “I consider the education of our children to be a shared responsibility and the successful development of a child depends on the cooperation of the students, the parents, school and the community. I am proud to be a part of the government, which places the needs of its youth high on the agenda.”

The recent removal of school fees on college students is a testimony of the government’s focus towards educational facilities. High school graduates are now afforded a smooth transition to an exceptional college free of charge.

Moreover, the expansion of Dominica State College also creates greater opportunities for the youth with a broad spectrum of the courses being offered now within Dominica. Universal Secondary Education has also ensured all the students to have access to high education without any trouble.

During her address, Melissa Skerrit said “I want to extend heartfelt gratitude to Mr John Lewis, the proprietor of Jay's Bookstore, for his continued support of the programme. With his assistance, my foundation was able to equip fifty students with scholarship packages for the preschool, primary school and high school levels.”
