The largest hotel in Dominica is planning to reopen more than half of its rooms in January 2018.

Fort Young Hotel, in the capital Roseau, suffered horrendous damage during the passage of Hurricane Maria on 18 September.

A WIC News reporter in the country described it as "shredded" when contact with the outside world was finally restored.

Now hotel management team have announced that by 15 January they expect 41 out of 72 rooms available to be available to book.

The bar, pool and at least one of the meeting rooms are also expected to be operational.

“We’re committed to accommodating relief workers, rebuilding this iconic hotel and bringing back visitors to this special island,” said Marvlyn James, general manager of Fort Young Hotel.

“Tourists are the seeds that are needed to restore Dominica to its natural grandeur and help it blossom once again.”

The hotel has restored its power, water and wi-fi. It is currently open in a limited capacity with reduced rates, and is currently being used by aid workers island rebuilds.

When Hurricane Maria hit, the property was almost at full capacity, according to the hotel.
