Roseau 07 August 2019: Just as cruise ship maintenance is vital to keeping existing fleets up to par with brand new vessels, sustaining modernized port infrastructures and local attractions is also important to attract and keep cruise traffic. To attract international cruises and to subtle the import Prime Minister of Dominica, Dr. Roosevelt Skerrit announced in his budget debate that Dominica will soon get a cruise village to improve the tourism and employment opportunities to the locals.
Skerrit said, “There is no question that we need to modernize our cruise and cargo ports. Therefore, we have embarked on a process towards the realization of two critical pieces of infrastructure in our country. We shall establish a cruise village which will include services to the ferries and duty-free shopping.”
According to information Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit will be leading a delegation to the United States later this month for talks on the construction of a new cruise ship and cargo port for the island.
During his address in the Parliament PM also said that the cargo port will be constructed with advanced technology and equipment to assist with the efficient operations of the port and it will be financed through a private-public partnership which will help limit the Government’s financial contribution to its construction.
He said he is also expected to meet with representatives of the cruise lines and that his delegation would include the 22 year-old Lorenzo Sanford, who was elected late last month Chief of the Kalinago Reserve where the island’s indigenous people reside
