Cuba strengthen rules for travelers

Cuban officials declared over the weekend they will toughen measures against the spread of COVID-19, announcing that tourists and others who visit the country to isolate themselves at their own time for several days.

The report by Dr. Francisco Durán, Cuba's Director of Epidemiology, comes at a time when the nation is announcing daily progress of new COVID-19 diseases as well as four additional deaths.

Beaches remained tight, as were also many hotels on the island.

Even after the short easing of restraints late last year, few foreign tourists arrived.

Duran said that from 8 February, tourists coming into the country would be sent to hotels, wherever they'll wait five days for their PCR test result.

Cubans turning home from abroad will be housed in other cities at government time to await test results.

Diplomats and some kinds of foreign businesspeople will be allowed to isolate themselves at home.

Cuba has reported 25,674 coronavirus diseases and 213 deaths since March, according to Johns Hopkins University. Cuba had eased restrictions in November, preparing airports for tourists and others, but the number of infections detected has risen sharply this month, often due to Cubans visiting their relatives on the island.

Civil aviation authorities said Saturday they will reduce flights from the U.S., Mexico, Panama, and the Bahamas.

The Cuban tourism sector was recently reopened for international tourists as the country's tourism-based economy was undergoing a severe crisis caused by the coronavirus pandemic.
