President Ali said they condemn the barefaced theft and destruction of property by some with the support of known political elements on the East Coast of Demerara. He said the government has already made it clear that it supports the ongoing independent investigation to ensure there is justice for Quindon Bacchus.
Attorney General Nandlall said that a perceived injustice could never justify the commission of another injustice. He said the alleged wrongful death of one could never justify or be the basis for the robbery, assault and malicious destruction of property of others, moreover when the victims of these atrocities have no nexus whatsoever to the perceived injustice perpetrated.[gallery columns="2" ids="43210,43211,43212,43213,43214,43215,43216"]
AG added that burning, looting, grievous bodily harm, malicious damage to public and private property, unlawful assembly, riotous conduct, robbery with violence and treasonable utterances are all indictable offences which carry the harshest array of penalties under the Laws of Guyana.
"Such actions will never be countenanced in any democratic and civilized society. Guyana is no different. The rule of law must prevail," added the AG.
He stated that the government has already disclosed that the investigation into the alleged shooting, which is believed to have ignited the mayhem, is ongoing and shall conclude shortly. He said the outcome is from this process, and the law will run its course.
However, this process also must not be subverted. It is how the legal machinery works in a democratic society governed by the rule of law.During his career as an Attorney-at-Law, I represented many who alleged violence and death at the hands of the Guyana Police Force under various governments, including the last one. Not once did I counsel violence or riotous conduct as a response. I took the necessary lawful steps, filed legal proceedings and won millions of dollars for the victims and their beneficiaries.
People strongly condemn the violent and criminal outbursts that have occurred on the East Coast of Demerara. The law will have to be applied with full force. The rule of law offers no other option.Latest
