Dominica govt starts to build 40 climate resilient homes in Salybia constituency

The government of Dominica is constructing 40-new climate-resilient homes in the Salybia constituency. The homes will be able to withstand hurricane-force winds and seismic activity. Member of Parliament for the Salybia Constituency Cozier Frederick said that the housing stock would rise in the constituency over the next few months. He said all workers employed on the housing project are from the constituency. "The housing projects around the Kalinago Territory have brought in more opportunities for constituents aside from an enhanced level of living," said Frederick. He stated that the Dominica government is working on one of the HRP projects in the Sineku neighbourhood, "The foundation work has been completed, and workers are currently laying the blocks. Over the next six months, we will have more than forty of those built across the neighbourhood, and there are two or three that have already been completed, so we see the evolution of the housing product within that space," said Frederick. Furthermore, he said he is grateful to be part of a government that is working to provide houses and jobs for the people of Salybia constituency.

He said now local contractors with a variety of skillsets, including plumbers, electricians, bricklayers, and carpenters, among others are getting employment at these projects. "As we go throughout the Kalinago Territory and, by extension, the constituency, we will encounter residents working. So there's a housing boom going on in the district right now, and I'm happy to be the Parl Rep and contribute to that movement to ensuring that people have a pleasant and resilient place to live," the MP continued. The forty homes will include two-bedroom homes with a bathroom and kitchen.

Romain Valmond, a receiver of one of the homes, has expressed his gratitude to all who have helped make this a reality, saying, "God bless all those who have helped me build my house." I'm grateful to everyone since I couldn't have done it without them." Dominica's government continues to honour its promises to the Dominican people. These homes are being built as part of the government's plans to make Dominica the world's first climate-resilient nation. The beneficiaries include people who lost their homes to natural catastrophes, mainly Hurricane Maria in 2017.
