Surinam Airways has stated that it will stop operating flights to Port-of-Spain, Trinidad, ending nearly three decades of service. The airline did not specify what prompted the immediate suspension, but it did say it would examine its business model and economic viability throughout its entire route network.
Passengers whose flights have been cancelled will be accommodated through a deal with Caribbean Airlines Limited (CAL). They should contact their travel agencies or Surinam Airways directly through email at callcenter@flyslm.com.
The airline stated that the suspension of flights from Port-of-Spain was a difficult choice as it had been operating services for 29-years.
"It is a difficult choice for us to discontinue operations to the Trinidad market after 29 years of serving the people of this lovely island," a representative for Surinam Airways said.
"Our hearts are broken that we must end our almost three-decade connection with our General Sales Agent (GSA), loyal personnel, dedicated people, travel agents, and destination authorities," the airline added.
Surinam Airways also thanked Trinidad and Tobago for its trust and unwavering support in making it a reliable airline.
"We are hoping that after analysing our route network and fleet requirements, we will be able to resume operations to 10 or more locations in the future, ensuring sustainable growth in the region," the airline added.
Surinam Airways, abbreviated as SLM, is the national airline of Suriname. It is based in Paramaribo and operates regional and long-haul passenger flights from its hub at Johan Adolf Pengel International Airport ( Zanderij).
