The US embassy in Bridgetown, Barbados, has announced St Mary’s College as the winner of it’s St Lucia STEM video competition.
The contest, which was open to all secondary school students in St Lucia aged 13 or over, required students to produce a short video explaining why STEM — science, technology, engineering and math — is important in their community.
The contest was designed to support the US embassy’s goal of promoting STEM education as a “driver of sustainable economic growth, and as a means to foster innovation and empower youth,” the embassy said in a statement
Two creative students from the all-boys Catholic secondary school St Mary’s College emerged victorious after submitting a video explaining how advances in STEM fields allowed for improved standards of living.
They were supervised by teacher, Melanie Wilson.
Commitment to STEM
Linda Taglialatela , US ambassador to Barbados, the Eastern Caribbean, and the OECS, congratulated the winning students during a ceremony at the college earlier today (30 June).
The ambassador presented a grand prize package including a Celestron telescope, books, and other STEM-themed items to the school’s science department.
“We are thrilled that we received so many thoughtful and creative entries,” Taglialatela said.
“I am continually amazed by the talent and creativity of students in St Lucia, and across the Eastern Caribbean. They showed us why STEM is important in their lives and to their futures, and that makes the embassy’s ongoing commitment to STEM education feel even more worthwhile.”
