Despite the Parliamentary elections date is yet to be announced, the election campaigning is reaching to new heat everyday. People of St Kitts and Nevis exercised their franchise on 16th of February in 2015, in which coalition of three political fronts, "Team Unity" triumphed the elections with the support of rebel labour leaders who openly supported Prime Minister Dr Timothy Harris and his allies.
In 2015 elections, two major political fronts - St Kitts and Nevis Labour Party and Team Unity which is an alliance of three political parties (People's Action Movement, the Concerned Citizens Movement, and the People's Labour Party) - were in a close contest in which latter managed to clinch the victory. One of the major factors behind the victory of Team Unity in 2015 was the rebellion of senior leaders of Labour party, which provided them with a narrow win on several constituencies.
Team Unity recorded its victory on 7 out of the total 11 seats in both St Kitts and Nevis, while SKNLP still managed to win four seats including 3 in St Kitts and 1 in Nevis.
A prominent aspect of this is that the alliance of Team Unity had the open support of two senior leaders, former Deputy Prime Minister, Sam Condor currently serving as Permanent Representative of St Kitts and Nevis to the United Nations and renowned lawyer Dwyer Astapahan.
Sam Condor served as Deputy Prime Minister between 1995 and 2013 for St Kitts and Nevis Labour Party, but later he shifted his political preferences and supported the Team Unity, while Dwyer Astaphan who also served as a minister for Labour administration supported Team Unity in 2015.
It is evident that Sam Condor and Dwyer Astaphan are seasoned leaders as they have worked with both SKN Labour Party and Team Unity governments. As the political experience speaks, their support will display which political party will be better for the people of St Kitts and Nevis.
But, so far by February 2020, Sam Condor and Dwyer Astaphan have failed to specify their support for any political outfit for upcoming general election of SKN.
In the testing ground of Team Unity, support of these two individuals plays a role in outcome of the election as both of them are considered to be seasoned leaders of St Kitts and Nevis.
Notably, former civil servant of St Kitts and Nevis Nigel Faron have already mentioned about the dissatisfaction of Sam Condor with Team Unity or specifically Prime Minister himself. According to an article of Faron published by WIC News, Sam Condor, will be relinquishing his position in the coming weeks and plans to lend his support to the St Kitts and Nevis Labour Party, for whom he previously served as Deputy Prime Minister between 1995 and 2013.WIC News tried to contact Sam Condor in the relation to his political preference in upcoming general election. Despite repeated reminders, he did not respond to any of the query flagged by WIC News correspondent.
In an interesting turn to politics of St Kitts and Nevis, renowned pollster Peter Wickham is more into one sided election support as he is officially hired by the ruling Team Unity. According to WIC News sources, Wickham also reached out to Sam Condor after WIC released his disappointment from Prime Minister. Both Wickham and Condor had long lasting conversation on phone call. Peter Wickham tried to convince Sam Condor to stay in the party as his depart will be damaging in the upcoming elections.
In this regard, WIC News Correspondent also tried to reach Wickham including connection through WhatsApp, but he also did not respond to any of the queries raised by WIC News.
