PM Mitchell reaffirms Grenada's commitment to multilateralism in tackling ocean crisis

Prime Minister of Grenada, Dickon Mitchell, reaffirmed Grenada's commitment to multilateralism in tackling the multiple crisis facing the oceans. The statement was made by the PM during the Our Ocean Conference in Athens, Greece.

"We are committed to preserving our marine heritage and advancing the sustainable development of our exclusive economic zone. We've made it a priority to continue to incorporate ambitious international sustainable plans as part of our commitment," said the Prime Minister of Grenada. The 9th edition of the prestigious conference started on April 15 and will continue till 17. The 2024 conference in Athens is a milestone event that aims to engage all major stakeholders in the societies for the benefit of present and future generations. During the conference, PM Mitchell highlighted Grenada's deep connection to the Caribbean Sea and Atlantic Ocean and stressed the urgency of addressing climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution.

In his speech, the Grenadian leader emphasized that as the Big Ocean States, Grenada is among the ones clearly grappling more than ever with the consequences of climate change, nature and biodiversity loss, and pollution.

He also underscored the country's commitment to sustainable ocean management and outlined various initiatives undertaken by his government while keeping in mind this approach.

The initiatives included the Integrated Coastal Zone Management Policy or Non-biodegradable Waste Control Act, or ban on single-use plastics, and the Blue Economy roadmap. PM Dickon Mitchell said that these serve as testaments to Grenada's unwavering commitment to the sustainable utilization.

The Prime Minister said that these initiatives are meant to fortify the coastal resilience, including concerted efforts in coastal coral restoration and sustainable fisheries management.

Furthermore, he called upon the big ocean states to ensure that the world is united in its approach and in making sure that those whose actions is required to help tackle these issues are not made to walk with commitments that are not implemented.

Not only this, but also the Grenadian leader pointed out that as Big Island States "We need the large land countries that have created this to work hand-in-hand with us to tackle these challenges."

The Prime Minister also lauded Greece for hosting such a conference which is aimed at one of the most significant issues being faced by the world collectively.
