During the recent Caribbean Community (CARICOM) meeting in Guyana, Prime Minister Dr Terrance Drew and other delegates of Saint Kitts and Nevis engaged in a key dialogue with representatives from the Partnership for Atlantic Cooperation (PAC). This discussion focused on fostering collaboration to address pressing maritime and environmental issues impacting Atlantic coastal nations.

The dialogue took place in the backdrop of other regional concerns, it saw the participation of senior officials from the Saint Kitts and Nevis delegation, including Head of Services, Thelma Richard, and Permanent Secretary in the Prime Minister’s Office, Naeemah Hazelle.

Representatives of PAC included the Senior Coordinator for Atlantic Cooperation, Ambassador Jessye Lapenn; Laura Lochman, The Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Energy Diplomacy in the Bureau of Energy Resources and Deputy Assistant Secretary for Caribbean Affairs and Haiti Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs, Barbara A Feinstein.

PM Drew seized the opportunity to highlight several points of interest, including the sargassum crisis, complex maritime boundaries, safeguarding oceanic ecosystems, advancing renewable energy solutions, and dealing with the disharmony surrounding Haiti.

PM Drew shared in a statement “This type of cooperation would be a vehicle to achieve what we have not been able to achieve before. We are ocean states, so that [partnership] is very important for us to prevent our seas from being exploited.”

PM Drew also outlined the collaborative renewable energy initiative, which is scheduled to take place at Saint Kitts and Nevis, and the significant benefits it will afford to Saint Kitts and Nevis and neighbouring islands.

The planned collaborative renewable energy initiative in Saint Kitts and Nevis serves as a tangible example of the potential benefits of cooperation. This initiative aims to provide a clean energy model that can be replicated across the region, fostering sustainable development and energy security for all.

The dialogue between Saint Kitts and Nevis and the PAC represents a significant step towards building a more collaborative and sustainable future for the Atlantic region.
