Monkeys, Opossums fleeing to Belize towns amid climate crisis face fatal encounters

Belize: As the Caribbean region continues to face the adverse impacts of climate change, Belize is recording tragic reports of animals seeking refuge in the towns because of the destruction of their natural habitats. The destruction is being caused by a lack of water and wildfires around the forest area. 

The animals including monkeys and opossums are rushing from their homes because of the problems they are facing and are looking to make habitats near the humans. But, they are facing heartbreaking consequences away from their home. 

According to the Belize Wildlife and Referral Clinic, in one such incident, a mother opossum, trying to protect her young ones, was attacked brutally by dogs in a backyard. Her babies were too young and fragile, which is why they didn’t survive the attack.

In another incident, a weary howler monkey who was trying to escape relentless wildfires was fatally attacked by domestic dogs, and in spite of the clinic’s efforts to save him, he passed away in their care a few hours later. 

The wildlife and referral clinic has made an urgent appeal to the citizens and residents of Belize to protect the wildlife and noted that innocent creatures are finding themselves in a major struggle as the water sources are vanishing and the wildfires are destroying their habitats. 

They further noted that they are seeking refuge in the neighbourhoods, and they need help and said, “Please, stay alert. Together, we can make a difference and protect these vulnerable animals in time of need.”

The organization also highlighted that it had opened arms to nearly 30 orphaned opossums since the beginning of this year. It added that they hail from diverse backgrounds and face unimaginable challenges. 

The clinic helps these species to grow and reclaim their wild heritage, and as they find their path, the team feels pride in the first groups of opossums who are all ready for their new homes. 

The Belize Wildlife and Referral Clinic is moving ahead and taking all necessary actions to protect the wildlife and are urging the general public to follow the same and give these species a chance to live.
