St. Kitts and Nevis: Leonard Herbert, a farmer from St. Kitts and Nevis shared the update from his farm in respect of the seedlings received as part of the 25 by 25 agenda. He mentioned of the fruiting stage of the crop seedlings.
Leonard Herbert has been working as a farmer for about 30 years, commonly known as Cole. The Ministry of Agriculture of St. Kitts and Nevis shared a visual glimpse from his farm where the tomato and pepper crop were planted using ground cover given to him for free from the Department of Agriculture of St. Kitts and Nevis as the part of 25 by 25 initiative.

Farmer mentioned that the crops are in the growth process and it has been around five to six weeks since they were planted. And, now, they are at the fruiting stage as they have some fruits. He highlighted that he is using the Florida Weave System. He added that he has put steel and the weave string in between every two plants. Such a system would tighten the plant next to one another, will keep them off the ground because if they are left on the ground, they tend to be spoiled like soil. As well he mentioned that insects would get to the plants but as the ground is covered so it helps. He outlined that the heat would also damage the crops so these are required to be off the ground. Connecting to it, he mentioned the support of the agriculture ministry as well where he said that he also received some ground cover, known as mulch. The purpose of mulch is to keep the moisture controlled by reducing the evaporation and soil erosion. He further casted light on the drip irrigation which as well is of great benefit. Interestingly, he added that he is expecting that the yield for tomatoes would surely give over 5000 pounds. However, pepper would give less. Such an update shared highlights towards meeting the standards of agenda and how the government is committed towards fulfilling it.Latest
