Jamaica: A 12-year-old female student of the Ocho Rios High School in St Ann, Jamaica, was rushed to hospital after she was reportedly shot by her 14-year-old schoolmate on the grounds of the institution on Monday.
According to the information, the male student took a firearm to the school to brag about it in front of his friends, but it went off, hitting another student in her leg. The wounded child was subsequently taken to the hospital for treatment, and the firearm was seized.
It is to be noted that classes were dismissed hours earlier than usual, and the police, after conducting their probe at the school’s nearby properties, are now searching for the male suspect to which the firearm belongs.
The police also reported that it was a grade seven male student who fired a shot accidentally while showing the firearm to his friends in the class. The parents at the institution in Jamaica were left feeling rattled after the incident.
Meanwhile, the victim remains hospitalized in a serious but stable condition, and the male student who brought the gun to the school is presently in police custody.
According to a police official, Dwight Powell, the investigators are following many leads to determine how and by what means the male student possessed that firearm.
Powell added that the Ocho Rios High School is presently being monitored under the Safe School Programme and he said that the principal and the entire faculty are actively cooperating and participating in the programme.
As the information circulated, the internet reacted to the situation by asking several questions, including where the student got the firearm, with some even saying that the country has become so unsafe that guns are becoming more common.
A user named Gloria said, “How did the firearm get onto the school grounds in the first place? If I am not mistaken, shouldn’t all schools have metal detectors? We have brilliant ideas, but we have no consistency and often leave things to luck.”
Another user named Phillip stressed, “What in the world is going on with these kids? Taking a firearm to school to show his schoolmates? Couldn’t hear of a inexplicable scenario.”
