Guyana: Two massive vessels also known as trawlers collided with the Demerara Harbour Bridge in Guyana, causing chaos across the area. The incident took place on Tuesday afternoon with authorities confirming that there were not any major structural damages to the huge bridge.
The authorities referred to it as a ‘minor’ accident, adding that no serious damages had been reported.
According to the information, a trawler and tugboat hit the bridge, but despite the incident, the authorities managed to keep the traffic moving smoothly.
The two trawlers drifted and collided with Spans 26 and 27 but it did not resulted in any major structural damages to the Demerara Harbour Bridge.
“As a result, Traffic continues to flow in both directions on the Demerara Harbour Bridge. Management assures that all efforts are in place for the safe transit of commuters as a result of this minor incident,” remarked the authorities.
They also advised the drivers of the loaded trucks to adhere to the speed limit because of this minor marine accident.
According to an official, the trawler had crashed into the bridge initially and later on despite warnings, a tug boat went ahead to rescue but instead crashed due to the heavy tides.
The management also assured that they are continuously making efforts to ensure the safe transit of commuters.
As the photos of the collision went viral on social media, people began to question how such occurrences continue to take place at the Demerara Harbour Bridge.
“This old structure get so much hit do hope that the New structure safety rules is put in place and some of them pilot dont slam it down whilst commuters is using the structure.its better safe than sorry,” wrote a user named Lindon Johnson while another user said, “This is happening too often man. Stricter regulations, laws and penalties needs to be implemented. Hope it can be fix immediately and be up and running.”
It is to be noted that this is not the first time that a maritime accident occurred at the Demerara; such incidents have been taking place often while disrupting the normal movement of vehicles at the bridge.
