Guyana postpones reopening of international airports

The Cheddi Jagan International Airport and Eugene F Correia International Airport will remain closed to commercial flights until August 1.

On Wednesday, the Guyana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) announced that it was postponing the start of Phase Four of the reopening plan after consultation with the Ministry of Public Health.

“This decision was made after careful assessment of the current COVID-19 (coronavirus) situation in Guyana and other international ports where flights to Guyana originates. In recent days, Guyana saw steep increases in the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases,” GCAA said in a statement.

The airports were closed in March after Guyana recorded its first COVID-19 patient and death. Guyana confirmed its 13 COVID-19 death on July 1 and there are currently 248 confirmed cases of which 116 have recovered.

The GCAA noted that it has not granted any approval for airlines to schedule commercial flights to Guyana. The authority has asked persons allowed to enter Guyana on repatriation flights to understand and comply with measures put in place to reduce COVID-19 transmissions.
