Grenada: Infrastructure upgrades at Princess Alice to disrupt traffic

Part of 'smart hospital' initiative

Friday, 7th July 2017

Plans to upgrade infrastructure at the Princess Alice Hospital in Mirabeau, St Andrew, means there will be disruptions to nearby traffic, says the Ministry of Health.

The public should be aware of the work from today. Visiting arrangements are also affected by the work.

The upgrades, which have been recommended and approved by international bodies, will include a redesigned roofing systems, improved water collection and storage system, the installation of an automated back-up power supply system, improved drainage, access, electrical and other modern out-fittings.

Before being caught in the flow of traffic to the hospital, the ministry is advising the public to keep a number of things in mind.

“A park and walk system is now in effect and all vehicle operators would be allowed parking only in the vicinity of the old nurses’ hostel,” according to a press release.

“Persons accessing the facility with non-emergencies would not be granted access to the back of the facility towards the accidents and emergencies department.

“Only persons with life threatening medical emergencies would be granted access to the back entrance of the facility to enter the A and E department.

Disaster resistant plans

All non-emergency patients and regular visitors are advised that they can only enter the hospital from the front, unless otherwise instructed by security, the release added.

The upgrading of the hospital is intended to “enhance services delivery and ensure it can function effectively especially in times of disasters”.

WIC News reported on the  ‘smart hospital’ initiative at the start of June.

It is is an international concept funded by the United Kingdom Department for International Development and executed by the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO).
