Leader of St Kitts and Nevis Labour Party has challenged Prime Minister Dr Timothy Harris for an open public debate. SKNLP Leader Dr Denzil L. Douglas challenged his political rival on Saturday.

During an interview, Dr Denzil L Douglas stated that he has sent an invitation to Team Unity leader Timothy Harris for an open debate on issues mainly concerning the economy and social infrastructure of St Kitts and Nevis.

The challenge has created a political wave in the country where people are curious to see both leaders on one stage sharing their thoughts.

However, Prime Minister Timothy Harris is yet to revert on the invitation. Dr Douglas states that he is confident that PM Harris will not accept the debate invitation because of his accountability concerns to the public.

St Kitts and Nevis is observing General Elections on June 05 as the parliament was officially dissolved on 13 May 2020.

Sam Condor, the former permanent representative of St Kitts and Nevis to the United Nations and senior lawyer Dwyer Astaphan, has left Team Unity alliance because of their unaccomplished 2015 agenda.

Elections are being conducted in an unusual manner because the country is observing the state of emergency for an extended period. The government has not yet announced to lift the state of emergency so the people can be part of the elections without being restricted.

Both political faces of the country lashed upon the Team Unity for not fulfilling the 'good governances' agenda on the name of which they succeeded in gaining a larger vote bank in 2015 general elections.

The Team Unity government is facing difficulties after being criticised by their founding members who contributed to the victory in the 2015 general elections.

Due to COVID-19 crisis, St Kitts and Nevis have closed its borders, which is why it is inevitable that this time diaspora will not be able to exercise their constitutional liberty of voting in their motherland.

Former civil servant St Kitts and Nevis stated that this challenge has made the elections even more exciting and it has never happened before that any leader challenges the other parties for an open debate, many in the country are awaiting the reply of Timothy Harris. "To be honest, I really do not wish Dr Timothy Harris to refuse this challenge. If he is the true leader of our federation, he must come upfront and answer to all those questions asked by opposition or specifically Dr Denzil Douglas. People of SKN will have a fair chance to decide whom they will be voting on June 5."
