Dominica Labour Party is making another turn by launching Edward Registe from Grand Bay Parliamentary constituency for the upcoming general elections. Registe, currently serving as general secretary of DLP, will be launched in the DLP’s massive style event at the Geneva Playing Field in Grand Bay on Sunday, September 15.
The Grand Bay Parliament Constituency has been under the rule of Dominica Labour Party since 1985. The constituency has always been a hot seat as Former Prime Minister of Dominica late Pierre Charles who held the office of the head of government from the year 2000 to 2004, has served as a member of Parliament for Grand Bay from 1985 until his death in 2004.
Registe is known as DLP’s loyalist who also serves as Deputy Speaker in Dominica’s House of Assembly. He has a rich record of community service in Grand Bay and is associated with the political rise of the late Prime Minister Pierre Charles, as an active, behind-the-scenes organizer.
Professionally, he works as the Public Relations Officer of the Dominica Water and Sewerage Company (DOWASCO).After getting launched Registe will replace two-time MP Justina Charles-Riviere in what is regarded as a DLP stronghold.
The DLP has won the seat at seven consecutive elections. The Dominica Freedom Party (DFP) is the only other party to have won the Grand Bay seat with Judianna Henderson in 1980 and A. A Casimir in 1975.
On the contrary, the opposition party United Workers Party has not yet managed to announce a candidate for the Grand Bay constituency, following the sudden passing of its rumored candidate late attorney Noreen John earlier this year.
As per the statistics of previous elections of Grand Bay Constituency, DLP MP Justina Charles made landslide victory receiving 1426 votes, whereas opposition party UWP’s candidate only managed to get mere 327 votes. The constituency voters turnout was recorded only 43.8 percent as only 1753 voters cast their votes out of total 4001 electors.
Not only in the year 2014, but also in the previous election results, Dominica Labour Party triumphed Grand Bay constituency with prodigious margins.
