Tuesday, 11th July 2017

A woman from the Portsmouth area has been arrested on suspicion of inflicting grievous bodily harm on a child after the victim visited the police station.

While no names have been released, WIC News understands that the suspect is related to the young person.

The crime first came to light on Sunday afternoon.

In a statement to the media, Inspector Pelham Jno Baptiste – the police force’s public relations officer – said that the nine-year-old went to the Portsmouth police station at around 4pm.

After a conversation with the police officers on duty, an assessment was undertaken and officials of the Social Welfare Department were contacted.

“The child was taken to the Reginald Fitzgerald Armour Hospital at Portsmouth where she received medical attention before being transferred to the Princess Margaret Hospital,” Jno Baptiste said.

While at hospital it was revealed that the girl had a fractured left arm, he added.

Yesterday police arrested a suspect in relation to the case, described by the police simply as “one adult female”.

Both the girl and a four-year-old are being looked after by the Social Welfare Department.
