High surf advisory is in effect for western coastlines, BMS shares
Barbados Meteorological Services (BMS) upgraded the High Surf Advisory for the western coastlines of Barbados as a result of the frontal system till Monday evening. A high surf advisory is issued when wave action poses a threat to life and property within the surf zone.  The marines are forecasted to remain moderate in open water with north swells, ranging between 1.5 to 2.5 meters, which is almost equal to 5 to 8 feet.  Citizens have also been warned that breaking wave action could heighten around high tide. Hazard update According to BMS forecasters, a broad area of low pressure in the North Atlantic is causing above-normal waves that are spreading across the ocean area waters of the Eastern Caribbean.  Since Friday, there has been an increase in surf activity on the west coast of the island. This surfing activity is becoming intense, and sea bathers and other marine users are advised to practice caution and take all necessary steps during this situation.  Further, it is recommended that beachgoers use beaches with lifeguard life-guard stations. This activity is supposed to be continued until Monday.  Key takeaways
  1. Authorities advised fishermen and sea bathers to follow measures suggested by the forecasters and exercise caution, particularly along the western coasts.
  2. While dipping into the water, one should ensure the use of on-duty lifeguards near beaches for safety and security while jumping onto the water.
  3. It is suggested to secure objects that can be swept away by the breaking wave activity.
The hazardous conditions of the sea raise concerns about the safety and security of the citizens, private property and public infrastructure.  The advisory is a result of a cold frontal system which is affecting the northeastern Caribbean. The effects of the frontal trough moved into the premises of Barbados on Friday. This feature has now been pushed forward in the areas of the south.  Notably, as a cold front moves over the island nation, the temperature is expected to span between 24 degrees Celsius and 27 degrees Celsius over the north of the island. According to the automatic weather stations, the temperature is forecasted to be 28 degrees Celsius to 30 degrees Celsius in the south of the nation.  Additionally, people may experience mostly sunny weather. As per the synopsis, the Atlantic high-pressure system is the dominant feature.  It is worth noting that to maintain the safety of the population and infrastructure, it is extremely important that collective precautions are taken.
