Bahamas: A mother has claimed that while her son was in police custody, a woman unknown to them delivered food items which she alleged contained poison.

According to the allegations, the food which was brought to him had a toxin with the consistent bleach and other stuff.

Following her son consuming the substance, she claims that he immediately felt ill, calling for medical assistance. But she alleges that officers ignored his cry. She also said that it was not until lawyers pressed police officers on the matter, which resulted in a call from medical personnel. The woman got to know of the situation after the lawyers told her that his son was not feeling well, and he told them, "I am feeling sick," following which he asked for medical assistance because he drank something out of the Gatorade bottle with a smell like bleach. The woman also alleged that when she went to the police station to know the situation, she was reportedly shoved away by police.

The reports added that her son was in policy custody regarding a minor case which is why lawyers have been going continuously to meet him and talk about solutions.

Following this incident, Chief Superintendent of the Bahamas, Ezra Maycock of the Wulff Road Police Station, stated protocol regarding food and goods while in custody. "No officer at any police station ought to receive food or drinks from any member of the public. The police force is responsible for persons in custody to provide meals for them. In the event that there is a person who has a sickness, a challenge like diabetes or something, who cannot eat the regular food with salt and what not, we will make arrangements for them to get something," she said.

Chief Superintendent Maycock noted if this incident took place as stated by the Mother, there would be consequences.
