The prime minister of The Bahamas visited Dominica yesterday, seeing first-hand the destruction from Hurricane Maria.

Hubert Minnis and his delegation – which included the heads of their National Emergncy Management Agency as well the Christian Council and Teachers' Association – took part in an aerial tour of the island before landing in the capital, Roseau, at Windsor Park Stadium.

They were greeted by Foreign Minister Francine Baron and National Security Minister Rayburn Blackmoore.

Minnis then met with Dominica’s Prime Minister, Roosevelt Skerrit.

Skerrit was presented with two cheques from The Bahamas, totalling US$60,000, to be used as part of hurricane relief efforts.

Skerrit said that the two premiers held “discussions on a number of issues”, which included The Bahamas taking some Dominican students and providing medical staff.

"We are very grateful to the people of The Bahamas for this very generous gift. In this situation everything helps."

Minnis, speaking at a press conference following their talks, said that his country was built by Dominicans.

"It is our duty and responsibility to assist Dominica where possible," he said.
