10 million units of illegal cigarettes with an estimated worth of 40 million lempiras smuggled from Jamaica were seized in Honduras.

On the 19th of February 2024, Honduras Authorities confirmed that the National Directorate of Border Police (NDBPS) seized 10 million units of cigarettes which were smuggled from Kingston, Jamaica to San Pedro Sula, Honduras.

Authorities expressed that when inspected, they discovered insufficient and inadequate documentation for the shipment of said cargo, implying that the shipment did not comply with the already established rules and regulations.

The authorities have stated, “The Border Police continues to carry out operational actions to counteract the crimes of smuggling, drug trafficking, and weapons, among other crimes.”

They went on to say “It is important to mention that this is one of the different seizures that have been made in the northern part of the country so far in 2024.”

Honduras has been dealing with smuggling rings for a long time now, the primary forms of smuggling they experience are in cigarettes, drugs, human trafficking and weapons.

International pressure also forces them to be more thorough with their imports, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) estimates that over 80% of the cocaine shipments going to America transit through Central America in which Honduras is considered to be a key route.

The Smuggling trade undermines legitimate businesses, reduces government revenue and distorts economic standing. Naturally, security concerns arise since this trade fuels gang violence and organized crime.

The government combats this by strengthening border security, efficient law enforcement and collaborating with international partners to carry out these efforts. The government has also been working to improve public awareness on the matter.

The authorities will make the seized product available to the corresponding authorities so that the due legal process can be carried out legitimately. More information will be made public as the legal process continues.
