Police on Antigua are investigating a robbery in Deep Bay that targeted two Canadian tourists and their tour guide.
The time of the incident has not been confirmed by authorities.
Initial reports stated that two visitors on the MS Celebrity Summit, which was docked in Heritage Quay, were robbed at gunpoint.
It has since emerged that a Canadian couple were being taken to Deep Bay for a swim by a local tour guide.
Two masked men, both carrying guns, stole the guide’s silver SsangYong pick-up truck, as well as “several valuable items” belonging to the tourists, police have said.
Among the stolen items was the couple’s passports.
“The visitors at no time were near the scene when the alleged incident took place,” according to the Royal Police Force of Antigua and Barbuda.
“Hence at no time were they in harm’s way or were their lives threatened. The police administration regretted the entire ordeal and has since given this matter their full attention.
“Additional security measures were immediately put in place to prevent any such recurrence.”
Nathan Dundas, the president of the Cruise Tourism Association president, told the Antigua Observer that the Canadian victims could face trouble in their final port of call – Florida – if the stolen travel documents are not recovered.
