Trinidad and Tobago: The United National Congress of Trinidad and Tobago will celebrate its 33rd Anniversary today (Saturday 30, 2022). The launch of the United National Congress in 1989 ensured that the struggle for ordinary Trinidadians and Tobagonians would continue and progress.

Since then, the UNC has broken glass ceilings and barriers, delivering progress to Trinidad and Tobago like no other party.

The first Prime Minister of Indian descent, the first trade unionist Prime Minister, the first woman Attorney General, the first woman Leader of Opposition, the first woman leader of a parliamentary party, the first woman Prime Minister, and the first woman Chair of the Commonwealth all came out of the UNC.

"To be a knowledge-based society with a globally competitive, technologically driven, diversified economy that will sustain full employment, growing prosperity, equal opportunity, a secure life, social cohesion, and the highest standard of living for all citizens," said the UNC in a press-release on Saturday morning.

"We have an unmatched record of advancing political evolution and accountability, economic progress, unprecedented educational expansion, civil and social rights, and social, cultural and economic equality," UNC added.

The party stated that UNC acknowledges that its patriotic supporters and base remain the heart of the party. Without their selfless sacrifice, love and support, the UNC could not exist. We thank them sincerely.

From the beginning, the UNC has been the most democratic party in Trinidad and Tobago. Even the other major party has adopted the UNC's "one person, one vote" system to modernize and democratize their old, colonial-era internal election process.

Even with all these accomplishments, at 33 years old, the UNC finds itself stronger than ever. In the last election, the UNC received more votes than it ever did in history, re-establishing itself as the most popular party in Trinidad.

The leader of the United National Congress, Kamla Persad Bissessar, SC, has moulded the UNC into the strongest Opposition Trinidad and Tobago has seen. This Opposition has claims to stand up more to the PNM than any other.

Kamla Persad-Bissessar said she ensured from the very beginning of this Twelfth Parliament that her team launched an attack, adding that the PNM Government is trying to suppress national development through an unprecedented four motions of No-confidence against senior Cabinet Ministers, namely the Ministers of National Security, Finance, Energy, and Health.

Even during the pandemic and the State of Emergency, the Monday Virtual Reports, Sunday Opposition Media Briefings and, most recently, T&T Speaks on Thursdays -- held consistently every week -- tells the population the truth about the state of the country and give a voice to the people of Trinidad and Tobago in every constituency.

As perĀ  the United National Congress, Kamla Persad Bissessar has been more than a political leader. She has been a pioneer in representative politics, shaping the UNC into more than a political party but a vehicle to give a place, plan and purpose for all citizens. She has created a national vehicle for unity and representation, ready to take back the government and save Trinidad and Tobago.

"Congratulations to our great party on its 33rd Anniversary. Even with its unbeatable record, the UNC's best years and greatest achievements are still to come," the UNC press release added.

"We thank our entire, loyal membership for allowing us to achieve this milestone. They remain the very lifeblood of the UNC. The party also thanks to its supporters who may not be members, as the UNC fights for all the people of Trinidad and Tobago," the party emphasized.
