Texas, United States: Trinidad and Tobago athlete Tyra Gittens is heading to the Tokyo Olympics following her performance at the Southeastern Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Texas.
Gittens, competing at the SEC Outdoor Championships 2021 in Texas on Saturday, won silver in the women’s high jump competition with a height of 1.89 metres. She is now endeavouring to achieve the Olympic standard of 1.96m.
Gittens attained the Olympic standard in the long jump, with a leap that was 6.96 metres, which is better than the 6.82 qualifying standard.
Even though Gittens has made it to Tokyo in the long jump, she missed out on qualifying for the heptathlon event by just two points, accumulating 6,418 points in the seven-discipline event.
It helped her strike gold in the heptathlon in Texas, but she still has a chance to redeem herself at the National Championships next month to make that her other event in Tokyo.
The international multi-sport event is scheduled to take place from 23 July to 8 August 2021 in Tokyo, Japan. The Olympics were scheduled for 2020. However, due to the coronavirus pandemic, the games were postponed for the very first time in its history.
