National sports policy presented in St Kitts and Nevis parliament

A national sports policy to chart a way ahead for sports development in St Kitts and Nevis was presented in the Federal Partliament by Jonel Powell-Minister of Youth,Sports and Culture.

During his address in the parliament, Sports Minister stated that the National Sports Policy 2020-2025 is desgined to bring a new era for sports in the twin-island nation of St Kitts and Nevis. He stated that this policy would provide oversight and direction of sports,physical activities and also physical education for next five years.

Minister Jonel Powell stated that the policy is desgined for the entire country and all age groups including children, older person and also the people with disabilities. Besides this, the new sports policy would also be assisting atheletes who represents schools, clubs and national teams.

"The new sports policy includes the important means of sport to address problems afflicting youth in schools and communities; to encourage healthy and active lifestyles; to establish roads for excellence, and to create new income streams and economic exercise for this Federation,” added Minister Jonel Powell.

Furthermore, the Minister added that it is extremely significant to build the success of local sports and traditions and the policy consists of a framework that would engage people in a comeback to street sports.

"The policy pledges to give similar possibilities and advances in the leadership capabilities of our youth as peacebuilders in schools and communities,” Jonel Powell.

Besides this, the leader asserted that the newly presented National Sports Policy comprises of global as it “reflects international standards and upholds alignment with the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

The Minister of Sport announced that corporate partners and different stakeholders also have an essential role to perform in the additional enrichment of sports tourism ventures that provide to economic growth.

The process to develop a complete National Sports Policy was initiated in 2017.
