Prime Minister of St Kitts and Nevis Dr Timothy Harris visited the Basseterre Public Market on Saturday, where he interacted with local farmers and vendors. During his visit, PM commended the efforts of all persons associated with the agriculture sector.
Ron Dublin Collins- Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture, Ian Chapman-Crops Programme Leader in the Department of Agriculture also accompanied the Prime Minister during his regular visit. He said that he feels comforted every time he goes to the public market in Basseterre," It's still a long way to go, but there has been a lot of progress,".
The public market in Basseterre is the main place in St Kitts where people can buy and sell agricultural goods, he felt "comforted."
Dr Harris said that he was very happy to learn that most of the food at the Basseterre Public Market was grown right here on the island. People in St Kitts and Nevis are benefiting from government policies, such as the stimulus packages that farmers have received."I feel that our investments are paying off," he said. This is because the government has given farmers help, both at a technical level and by buying things for them.
When the honourable prime minister was there, he could see how many people came to the Basseterre Public Market to buy things from the local vendors. Prime Minister Harris said that shows that the market is "doing what it was made to do."
He also thanked women farmers and vendors in St Kitts and Nevis for their work.
He congratulated Victoria Baucom, one of our farmers who believe in the long-term viability of farming. She has been doing a lot of good work there.
"Victoria, I want to congratulate you, congratulate your work on the farm, as well. I want to congratulate all the female farmers and all the people who are selling their goods, with a large number of them being women," he said.
