A man has been arrested after New York City's busiest bus terminal suffered an explosion this morning.

Reports are mixed at this time, with some stating that no one other than the suspect was hurt, while others state that at least four people have been left with injuries.

The alleged bomber is understood to be suffering "non-life threatening injuries", according to police sources.

Other sources have said that the incident was a bomb going off prematurely.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said: “This was an attempted terrorist attack."

The New York Post says it has spoken to police officials, who have confirmed the suspect is 27 years old and inspired by Islamic State militants.

It occurred at the Port Authority Bus Terminal, which is close to Times Square and other major attractions.

President Donald Trump has been briefed on the situation, and the area has been cordoned off.

The terminal serves more than 65 million passengers annually, and is the largest in the United States.
