Gunmen kills girlfriend and five others at Colorado shooting on Saturday
A man fatally shot six people, including his girlfriend, before aiming the gun at himself during a birthday party in Colorado, U.S. state officials said. Police arrived at the scene in the city of Colorado Springs to found six people dead, plus a seventh who was seriously injured and died after being admitted to a hospital on Sunday, a police statement said. While children attended the birthday party, which took place in a garage, they were not harmed. "The suspect, a boyfriend of one of the female victims, drove into the residence, walked inside and started shooting people at the party before taking his own life," the statement issued by Colorado Springs Police said. "Friends, family and children were in the trailer to celebrate when the shooting took place," the statement said.

The shooting took place in the Canterbury Manufactured Home Community, a garage park of about 470 trailers, about 110 miles south of Denver.

Police cordoned off the area, where a mobile crime lab was parked near the house. A small group of adults reached nearby, some of whom audibly sobbed with a small child.

Freddie Marquez, 33, said his mother-in-law was one of the deceased and that he was at the celebration but left on Saturday around 10:30 p.m.

Shortly after midnight, he got a call from the son of one of the women at the party who was weeping on the phone.

"Someone got in and shot everyone," Marquez told Reuters.

The Denver Post quoted neighbour Yenifer Reyes as stating she was awoken by the sound of firing.

"I thought it was a storm. Then I started hearing sirens," Reyes told the newspaper.

According to her, she saw the police take children out of the trailer and put them in a group of cars.

"They cried hysterically," Reyes said.

Police on Sunday had not yet revealed the identity of the shooter or victims.

"My heart breaks for the people who lost someone they love and for the children who have lost their parents," Colorado Springs Police Chief Vince Niski said in a declaration.

Governor Jared Polis notes that the attack took place on Mother's Day in the USA, "since many of us spend the day celebrating the women in our lives who have made us the people we are today".
