Trinidad: 20-year-old stabs father brutally for refusing him money to buy cigarettes

Trinidad and Tobago: A 20-year-old man is presently in police custody after he allegedly stabbed his father, aged 64, several times after refusing to give him money to purchase cigarettes. The incident took place at their residence on Barbara Street, Cleaver Road, in Arima, on June 11, 2024.

According to the information, the 64-year-old Grantley Winters was in his living room of his residence together with his wife his him son approached and asked his parents for some money to buy cigarettes.

After both the mother and father refused to give him money for the same, the suspect became angry and grabbed a knife from the kitchen and stabbed his father several times about his body.

The victim ran out of the house in an effort to escape, but his son chased him into the garage, where he suddenly fell down, and the 20-year-old came over to him and continued to stab him with the weapon.

The suspect then escaped from the scene on foot with the knife in his hand. The victim’s wife notified the police and emergency health services, following which the injured man was rushed to the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex for treatment.

Meanwhile, a team of officers led by PC Saldenha and PC Baksh of the Northern Division Emergency Response Patrol responded to the report and made their way to the location near the scene of the incident where they saw the suspect and arrested him.

The area was then investigated by the police officers, who attempted to find the weapon with which the crime was executed, but they were not able to find it.

Meanwhile, PC Dabreo is continuing investigations into the incident, which left the victim fighting for his life. He is also keeping a check over the victim whether he is coming in a stable condition or not, and as such, charges will be laid against his son.
