Remnants remain but warnings are lifted

Graphic from the National Hurricane Center.

Inclement weather is to be expected during Wednesday as a weakened Tropical Storm Dom passed the Windward Islands yesterday evening and during the night.

It appears to have degenerated into an open wave over the far southeastern Caribbean Sea.

All of the storm warnings and watches have been lifted, including that for Grenada, which was expected to be hit hardest.

Since early afternoon yesterday, businesses on the islands were closed, as was the airport.

Grenada’s National Emergency Operations Centre was activated at 6pm local time.

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) in Miami has reported the storm’s latest maximum sustained winds at 40mph (64kmph), with Don moving west at a speed of 25mph (40kmph).

The NHC is not expected to give any more updates on this storm as it appears to have calmed.

A disturbance in the Atlantic is showing signs if developing, but a cyclone forming remains unlikely.

“A low pressure system located more than 1,100 miles west-southwest

of the Cabo Verde Islands is producing a large area of cloudiness

and showers,” said a forecasters at the NHC.

“Some slow development of this system is possible during the next day or two while it moves toward the west-northwest or northwest at 10 to 15 mph.

“After that time, environmental conditions are forecast to become unfavourable for development.”

The chance of a cyclone forming within either 48 hours of the next five days is 30%.
